2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 @ Jacksonville Two teams often in the dogfight for mediocrity in the AFC South kick off 2011 with what is sure to be a run-heavy performance.

Sun, Sept. 18 BALTIMORE Little pinball Ravens RB Ray Rice is a pest to contain, but the visitors might yield more success turning to QB Joe Flacco, as Tennessee’s pass “D” was 29th in the league in 2010.

Sun, Sept. 25 DENVER Perhaps it would take the stars to align, but how cool would it be to see a QB showdown of second-year Bronco Tim Tebow vs. Titans rookie Jake Locker? We’re obviously all thinking about it.

Sun, Oct. 2 @ Cleveland The “Mistake on the Lake” is still home to a few players that can hurt you.

Sun, Oct. 9 @ Pittsburgh A decidedly blue-collar AFC North roadtrip, the second match-up in October ratchets up the difficulty level for the travelling Titans. If it is Locker under center for Tennessee, he will use his fleet-footed ability right off the bat while playing the Steelers.

Sun, Oct. 16 BYE

Sun, Oct. 23 HOUSTON The Texans and Titans both brought up the rear of the AFC South division last year; both teams have an array of talent and have been quite head-scratching to their respective fan bases, over recent years.

Sun, Oct. 30 INDIANAPOLIS Good news: the Titans get the Colts at home. The Colts also can’t run the ball, and aren’t that good at stopping it either. That is as optimistic as I can possibly be about this match-up, as far as Tennessee is concerned. How many Tennessee Vols fans will be in attendance, secretly rooting for school hero Peyton Manning?

Sun, Nov. 6 CINCINNATI The last game of a midseason three-game homestand presents a winning opportunity for the Titans. The Bengals have a respectable defense, but the fixes that franchise needs will not come overnight. If Chris Johnson can stretch the field and a Titans pivot – be it veteran or rookie – can make some throws, this should be a “W”.

Sun, Nov. 13 @ Carolina There’s no reason why Tennessee shouldn’t keep the good times rolling on the road in tobacco country against a franchise with even less of a clue than the striped cats.

Sun, Nov. 20 @ Atlanta Sadly, this is where the schedule cupcakes come to a crashing halt. The Falcons are a very good football team – and might be almost as good as they think they are, giving up every draft pick in recent history to get athletic WR Julio Jones from Alabama this year.

Sun, Nov. 27 TAMPA BAY A good young team comes to Nashville with one glaring weakness: the Bucs have a hard time plugging the run. If the dynamic Johnson has a big day, the Titans can snag this home victory.

Sun, Dec. 4 @ Buffalo The Bills can keep a game low-scoring and hang with most any team in the league from week to week, but what scares most people about Buffalo is probably the weather and the city itself, not the Bills’ superior on-field product.

Sun, Dec. 11 NEW ORLEANS It’s pretty obvious Saints QB Drew Brees will throw away from defensive cornerstone CB Cortland Finnegan. Other than that, Brees should be able to hassle Tennessee’s secondary early and often.

Sun, Dec. 18 @ Indianapolis We can’t just assume this is a Colts win because Indy is an aging team and more to the point, the wildcard for them is how healthy the offense can stay. The Colts depend on Manning, and if he has no targets, the Titans can maybe salivate.

Sun, Dec. 24 JACKSONVILLE Both teams drafted QBs early (Locker and Mizzou’s Blaine Gabbert for the Jags – tenth overall) and we could see them both cutting their teeth in this late-season game. This is a classic example of two decent teams in 2010 with gaping holes at the game’s most important position.

Sun, Jan. 1 @ Houston Texans fans should be raucous on New Year’s Day – even more so if Houston can shed its flaky perception one of these seasons and play up to its ability.
